19th May 2013, ORPHEUS Vice-president visits Oxford University Medical Sciences Graduate School

ORPHEUS Vice-president met 19 May 2013 with the Director of the Medical Sciences Graduate School and the Deputy Director of the EPS & Head of Education Policy Development to discuss standards for PhD education.

The Oxford PhD is of high quality, with considerable competition to obtain enrolment, such that in practice research experience was a requirement for entry. Course work is becoming more common. There was reluctance to include articles in the PhD thesis, since for multi-author work, it was not always clear how much the student had contributed to these. In general, there was considerable agreement between Oxford procedures and the ORPHEUS standards, but also room for further discussion of best practices. The Vice-president encouraged Oxford to become a member of ORPHEUS.
