The 5th International Conference of Postgraduate Medical Students was held in Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic, Nov 27-29, 2008. The Conference was for the fifth time organized by Charles University Prague, Medical Faculty of Hradec Kr·lovÈ and University Hospital Hradec Kralowe. The conference was organised with support of Johnson & Johnson. Members of the Organising Committee were: Faculty Dean Vladimir† Palicka, Vice Dean Miroslav Cervinka, PhD program director Ivo Steiner, Vera Tlapakova and Miroslava Paterova. The participating PhD candidates (students) came from all medical schools in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and from medical schools in: Copenhagen (Denmark), Dresden (Germany), Krakow (Poland), Liverpool (UK), Pecs (Hungary), Porto (Portugal), Vienna (Austria) and Zagreb (Croatia).
International Conference of Postgraduate Medical Students was for the fifth time organized by Charles University Prague, Medical Faculty of Hradec Kr·lovÈ, Czech Republic. 37 participating PhD candidates come from all medical schools in Czech Republic and Slovakia and from medical schools in Copenhagen (Denmark), Dresden (Germany), Krakow (Poland), Liverpool (UK), Pecs (Hungary), Porto (Portugal), Vienna (Austria) and Zagreb (Croatia). Hrade Kralowe conferences† represent an international competition for a best scientific work associated with PhD Thesis of candidates. Nomination of 3 best presentation was a task for 10 member international juri: Chairperson: Professor Miroslav Cervinka (Vice Dean, Hradec Kralowe), members were professors J. Strha (Prague), S. Bohm (Vienna), Fatima Carneiro (Porto), J. Drsata (Hradec Kralowe), D.Gordon (Copenhagen), J.Kiselovic (Bratislava), Z. Lackovic (Zagreb), T.Liebers (Dresden), Jadwiga Mirecka (Krakow) and A. Shenkin (Liverpool). For the year 2008 among 37 PhD candidates the juri decided that the winners†are:
- First prize (about 2500 Euros): Florian W Kiefer, from Vienna, with the presentation entitled: Osteopontin: a mediator of obesity-induced adipose tissue inflammation and insulin resistance.
- Secon prize was awarded to Rasmus Mogelvang from Copenhagen with the presentation: population study of cardiac tissue Doppler Imaging: Association with ischemic heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and mortality.
- Third prize was awarded to Jitka Fucikova from Prague with the presentation: Generation of clinical-grade dendritic cell-based vaccine for immunotherapy of ovarian cancer.
However, as a Dean of Hradec Kralowe Medical Faculty professor Vladimir Palicka wrote ìIím convinced that the idea of our meeting is similar to the idea behind the Olimpic games ñ wining is not the most important thing, but rather taking part, learning news in science and above all meeting new colleagues and friends”.
